Skill Resources - Out of the Picture
Images are an integral part of our thinking. You recognise your friends by comparing the image of the person in front of you with your stored images of their face - if you had to verbally memorise the characteristics of each of your friends’ faces, you’d be unlikely to recognise them at all, let alone be able to distinguish between the thousands of other faces with which you’re familiar.
Each of your emotions is preceded by the pictures and sound or speech within your thinking. It can happen so quickly that it doesn’t reach your conscious awareness – someone who’s afraid of spiders, can have screamed and run from the room before they’ve consciously realised they’ve seen one on the carpet.
So sometimes, by noticing and changing the characteristics of those images, you can change the way that thing makes you feel.
